The Power of Connectedness: Lessons from Leading my First Mindfulness Group

When I mentioned in internship supervision that I still needed group leadership hours, I hadn’t expected my supervisor, Amy Van Gunst, to give so much creative freedom – but I’m so glad she did. After Amy gave the go-ahead, I turned to the other intern, Emily – my career soulmate, as she calls us – and I could feel this spark of something between us. It’s like we were already on the same wavelength, ideas swirling through our minds, connected with energy.

We’d both been quietly dreaming of ways we could create an accessible group for our clients and community. When we met to brainstorm, it became clear right away: a mindfulness group. A come-as-you-are space for adults. From that moment on, intention and passion guided every step of our planning.

The group met for four weeks in May in a cozy upstairs office at Fountain Hill that began to feel like our sanctuary on Wednesday nights. After the first session, as the last member left and the door clicked shut, Emily turned to me with excitement in her eyes and said, “We did it.” And we had. We had created a space where members could gather, grow their self-understanding, and offer themselves and each other kindness, compassion, and grace.

On our final night, as we reflected together, I felt a deep sense of connection and gratitude. For these people. For this work. For Emily and our teamwork. It may seem small from the outside, but for me, this was the start of something really meaningful.

I’m grateful to Fountain Hill for the opportunity, to the staff for their support and encouragement, to Amy who had confidence in us, and most of all to the members who took a leap of faith and showed up each week with such presence and openness. It’s with great excitement that I look ahead to planning our next mindfulness group — this time as a full-time Limited Licensed Counselor at the Fountain Hill Center. I can’t wait for what’s next.
