Welcome, Leigh Ellis

Leigh Ellis, MA, LLPCThe Fountain Hill Center is pleased to welcome new counselor Leigh Ellis as a full-time member of our permanent staff! Leigh completed her counseling internship at FHC in May and her bridging in September of 2017. She holds a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Michigan University and is a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor.

According to Amy Van Gunst, Executive Coordinator for The Fountain Hill Center, “We are thrilled to have Leigh joining us on a permanent basis. Her capacity for empathy, her calm and welcoming presence, her passion for making counseling accessible and inclusive, and her experience working with K-12 students are wonderful assets that I know will stand her, her clients, and our Center in good stead.”

Building on Previous Experience

During her internship, Leigh offered low- and no-fee counseling services to a wide variety of individual clients, as well as couples and families. She also provided in-school counseling services to Shelby Public Schools students. These services included counseling and consultation with students, families, and teachers for issues like anger, bullying, depression, fears and worries, grief and loss, hyperactivity, perfectionism, and social skills.

Leigh will be providing similar services to students at Grant and Newaygo Public Schools during the 2018-19 school year. She will be taking over this work from Fountain Hill therapist Kimber Decker, who is stepping away from his in-school counseling role in these districts in order to concentrate on building his private practice in Grand Rapids. Leigh will also be assuming the role of Fountain Hill Center School Services Coordinator. As School Services Coordinator, Leigh will be coordinating Fountain Hill’s in-school counseling program at Shelby Public Schools.

A Passion for Removing Barriers

As Leigh notes when discussing her motivation for doing the work that she does,  “I am passionate about removing the barriers to counseling, and inclusion is a high priority for me. I chose the Fountain Hill Center as the location for my internship because it offered the chance for me to do individual therapy with a diverse clientele. I’m thankful to be moving into a private practice position that will allow me to continue working with a variety of people and with a variety of concerns.”

Leigh takes a holistic approach in her counseling practice, and integrates mindfulness and body awareness into traditional talk therapy. Her therapeutic model is interpersonal, psychodynamic, and person-centered. She strives to provide a safe, empathic, and secure environment where clients of all ages can explore themselves, their feelings, and their relationships. She strives to treat the whole person, with a focus on promoting wellness in all areas of life. Leigh is interested in seeing clients of all ages, and helping them to learn coping skills, manage symptoms and stressors, and work on coming to terms with unresolved trauma (due to childhood abuse/neglect, etc.)
