Altogether Boys

Logo - Altogether Boys The 21st century is calling out for culturally aware, emotionally intelligent, and socially savvy men. But the cultural traditions we have in place to raise boys typically don’t do a good job of teaching these skills. Especially during the middle school years.

The Altogether Boys program is designed to address this gap. Through knowledge-sharing, mentoring, and interactive activities, it helps boys in grades 6-8 develop what it takes to become healthy, wholehearted men: the strength to be sensitive to complex issues, the intelligence to build strong friendships, and the courage to tackle tough situations. These are the qualities it takes to succeed in a 21st-century economy and to stay healthy and happy in a changing world.

Altogether Boys: Giving Boys the Tools They Need to Succeed

Flyer Graphic - Altogether Boys ProgramThis portable, 8-week course, developed by the Men’s Resource Center of West Michigan, is available to schools, church groups, summer camps, sports teams, and other organizations interested in making boys’ emotional and psychosocial well-being a priority. In it, boys develop the tools to:

  • become aware of how we influence and are influenced by our shared culture
  • identify, understand, and experience their emotions in sophisticated and intelligent ways
  • discover strength in strong peer communities, and build these communities
  • recognize opportunities to make healthy choices
  • develop a strong, healthy, and balanced self-esteem

Boys in our educational program build these skills with dynamic mentors, who facilitate complicated concepts in an exciting, fun, and meaningful environment. Boys leaving our program have been taught to recognize how frustration builds, how healthy friendships work, how to understand social pressure, and how to make good choices. Perhaps, most importantly, they know how to reach out when they need support and guidance.

Clinical research indicates that middle school is perhaps the most complex and sensitive time in a boy’s development and that the choices we make for our sons during their middle school years will shape the men they become tomorrow.
